-ER is the most productive suffix in English Scrabble. It creates agent nouns (baker, runner, driver), comparative adjectives (faster, colder, wider), and legal words from roots you already know. E and R are two of the most common tiles — you'll almost always have one of them.

Why -ER Words Win Scrabble Games
- Hooks everywhere: Almost any verb can take -ER (BAKE → BAKER, RUN → RUNNER). If you see a word ending in a common root, you can often extend it by two tiles
- Comparative adjectives: Any adjective under 2 syllables takes -ER. FAST → FASTER adds 2 tiles and typically 3–5 points
- ER itself is a valid 2-letter word (expressing hesitation), worth 2 points — sometimes that's all you need to bridge two existing words
- Bingo setup: Keeping E and R on your rack with 5 other common letters often yields a 7-letter play: PAINTER, MASTERS, HUNTERS,ENDERS, PLAYERS
- Agent nouns: -ER converts verbs to nouns freely — RIDE → RIDER, HUNT → HUNTER, SEND → SENDER
High-Value -ER Patterns
Words containing Q, Z, X, J before -ER score especially well: BOXER (14pts), MIXER (14pts), JAZZER (26pts). Keep an eye out for these plays — they combine a premium letter with the common -ER ending.
